Food Co-ops Unite to Support Indigenous Food Systems

This year, the Co-op is proud to collaborate with National Co-op Grocers (NCG) and our sister co-ops nationwide to support North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems (NĀTIFS), a non-profit dedicated to raising awareness about the rich history of indigenous foods and fostering the resurgence of indigenous food networks.

Supporting this cause in November is no accident. Recognizing that the glossed-over story of the first Thanksgiving is a grossly inaccurate version of history, food co-ops across the country are donating 5 cents from every Field Day product sold between Oct. 30 and Dec. 3 to our friends at NĀTIFS.

NĀTIFS offers a wide range of programs that support indigenous food networks, including training opportunities, educational workshops, and resources for aspiring indigenous entrepreneurs. Their work also goes beyond just food; it’s about cultural revitalization, economic development, and creating lasting social impact.

How You Can Get Involved

Want to contribute to NĀTIFS’ mission? Here are some things you can do:

Visit their website. Learn more about their work at natifs.org.

Follow NĀTIFS on social media. Stay updated on their initiatives and spread awareness among your networks.

Share their message. Help amplify NĀTIFS’ mission by sharing their content on social media.

Celebrating the True Spirit of Harvest

While enjoying delicious food is a part of Thanksgiving, there’s so much more to appreciate about the harvest season. Here are some resources to explore the deeper meaning of the harvest and the traditional practices of indigenous communities:

Learn about the Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving Address. This beautiful address offers a perspective on giving thanks that emphasizes harmony and respect for all living things.

Explore Native American Heritage Month Discover the rich history and diverse cultures of Native American people through resources at https://nativeamericanheritagemonth.gov/.

Rethinking Thanksgiving Celebrations: Native Perspective on Thanksgiving. This resource provides valuable insight from Native American voices about the traditional meaning of harvest celebrations.

This November, shop Field Day and help us support our good friends at NĀTIFS! By supporting NĀTIFS and learning more about indigenous food systems, we can celebrate the harvest season in a way that honors the past and fosters a more inclusive future.
