Owner Rewards

Member-owners, our Rewards program is one of the sweetest perks we offer. The purpose of the program is to reward you for being an owner of the business and a regular Co-op shopper.

How does it work?

Quite simply, the more you shop, the more you earn. Especially when you buy local. (See the fine print below.) To earn your Rewards, all you have to do is shop. We take care of the rest! Member-owners are automatically enrolled.

Not a member yet? Let’s fix that.

Key Details

  • Members only! (Have we mentioned that yet?)
  • Every day you earn 2% on New Hampshire and Vermont products and 1% on all other purchases.
  • Earn even more during multiplier events. These special promotions allow you to earn 3% or more on various purchases.
  • Shop with your earned rewards. Use them regularly or save them up and use them occasionally. It’s up to you. There isn’t a set minimum or maximum.
  • You have a whole year to use your CO-OP Rewards. Rewards expire a year from date earned.

The Co-op defines New Hampshire and Vermont (β€œlocal”) products as grown, produced, tapped or collected in New Hampshire or Vermont. Products are considered local if two or more of the three following requirements are met:

1) 50% or more of the ingredients in the product are made in N.H. or Vt. according to requirements above.

2) The product is processed in N.H. or Vt. This includes pressing, baking, brewing, fermenting, drying, milling, canning, bottling, roasting, or otherwise substantially transforming the product.

3) The primary headquarters of the product manufacturer is located in N.H. or Vt.

The Co-op Rewards program is available only to Co-op member-owners. This includes Co-op employees. A member-owner is an individual who owns at least 10 shares in the Co-op. Anyone with a Co-op number who owns fewer than 10 shares is a subscriber. The Rewards program is not available to subscribers.

Member-owners are automatically enrolled in the Co-op Rewards program when they join the Co-op. Rewards are earned by individual member-owners. It is not possible to combine Rewards across multiple accounts. It is recommended that households use only one membership to consolidate their Rewards earnings.

Rewards are earned automatically through point-of-sale transactions at the Front-End, Customer Relations Desks, Self-Checkouts, and Online ordering. A member-owner must be associated with the transaction for the Rewards to be earned.

Member-owners will not earn or be able to redeem Rewards on gas, auto service center repairs/purchases, Co-op Learning Center classes, bottle deposits, donations, Pennies for Change, membership dues and shares, member charge accounts, Fedco Seed orders, postage stamps, and delivery/shipping charges.

Rewards can be earned, but not redeemed, on alcohol purchases.

Rewards can be redeemed, but not earned, on gift cards.

Rewards are intended for product purchases only and cannot be exchanged for cash.

Business memberships that utilize the Co-op’s at-cost ordering program are not eligible to earn Rewards.

Nourish. Cultivate. Cooperate.

Why We Said Goodbye to Discount Days and How it Saved the Co-op

We still get emails once in a while from members who miss our old Member Discount Days (10% off your bill once a month). We understand! It was a beautiful perk on paper, but in practice? Financially, it was a killer. Here is a quick look at why we pivoted to Owner Rewards.

The Reality of Grocery Margins

The grocery business runs on razor-thin net profit marginsβ€”usually just 1% to 3%. Giving a 10% discount corresponds to selling groceries at a significant financial loss.

While a small loss on a single item is manageable, applying it to an entire cart can devastate a store’s margins. Co-op members wisely saved their discount for massive bulk hauls, which quickly skyrocketedβ€”costing our community-owned business nearly $1 million annually, with projections of $3 million. We also couldn’t predict cash flow, budget effectively, or keep everyday prices low for everyone.

A Sustainable Future

Switching to our Owner Rewards Program was far more sustainable and allowed us to reward member-owner loyalty incrementally without risking financial stability. More importantly, it fit our mission of prioritizing food access and inclusionβ€”i.e., keeping everyday prices as low as possible for everyone in our community, regardless of socioeconomic status.

Bottom lineβ€”as members of a cooperative, we are all co-owners of this business. That means we share a unique responsibility to make decisions that protect the business’ long-term health, ensuring it survives to serve the next generation. Our staff works hard each day to keep prices as fair as possible while still offering sweet perks and benefits for our members. Thank you for supporting the tough choices required to keep this storied old business thriving together!
