Our Next Green Move: Plastic Reduction Comes to Bulk

Co-op members and shoppers, we hear you! We’re constantly learning how important it is to our community that we take steps to improve our environmental impact. In fact, each member survey of the last three years has put environmental impact in the top tier of Co-op priorities. We’ve made some great strides improving the footprint of our facilities. Now we’re gearing up for the first step in our next act—which will take some collaboration. We’re not scared, together we’re a co-op!

Collaboration and mutual problem solving are in our DNA.

First stop: the Bulk Department. Beginning at the end of this month (Earth month!) we won’t be offering plastic bags in our Bulk Departments. We’re with you—we know it’s the right thing to do for our planet, our community, and future generations of shoppers. We’ll continue to offer sturdy paper bags and encourage us all to find re-usable bags, jars, or containers that work for you (hint: we have some good options). Keep your eyes peeled for Co-op Rewards! You’ll also notice we are trialing a paper material called Glassine, which is recyclable and free from coatings, and has some moisture resistance due to its unique processing (a lot of pressure!).

Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much. —Helen Keller

Why Bulk? It’s a great place to prioritize reusable and paper bags. The products are dry—eliminating many potential issues with both bag integrity (tearing and spilling), and food safety. Plus, paper bags are easily marked with a pen or pencil to note the item’s PLU#. Tape will still be available to mark your favorite reusable bags and containers.

Our Bulk teams have tons of tips on how to store and keep your favorite goodies fresh once you get them home.

We are excited to make this small shift together. The Co-op strives to meet the needs of our members and community in the way that supports our shared values and resources. We learn about your needs and ideas through conversations on the sales floor, emailed surveys, comments, and connecting with the Board of Directors

Got questions or comments? Reach out to us to find out more about joining a packaging working group of members, shoppers, and employees. We plan on making this change stick, so please keep in touch with your experience and any other top ideas to make shopping our stores environmentally friendly and fun!

Rebecca White is the Co-op’s Associate Director of Cooperative Identity.
