Eat Local, You Should. Simple Recipes for Star Wars Day

Star Wars Day is Sunday. Woo-hoo! If you named your pet ferret Anakin, own a lightsaber keychain, and generally love this beloved franchise as much as we do, then we highly recommend trying one of these Star Wars-themed dishes using local foods that are in stores now. May the Fourth be with you!

EWOK FOREST FIDDLEHEADS

Local fiddleheads are here, but the season is short so they won’t be here for long. To prepare, first trim the ends off each fiddlehead as well as any black parts of the stems or papery brown husk on the coils. Submerge in cold water and brush carefully. Next, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook ferns in the boiling water until barely tender, usually 7 to 10 minutes. (Heads up! This is super important. Forget this step and you’ll feel sicker than a stormtrooper with the Iridian Plague.) Next, sauté cleaned fiddleheads with some garlic, a touch of soy sauce, and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. The slightly bitter, earthy flavor of the fiddleheads channels a wild forest vibe that’s reminiscent of our furry Ewok friends and their woodland home on Endor.

HAN SOLO’S CARBONITE CANDY

This is a great treat for the little Padawans. Heat pure maple syrup in a pan with a candy thermometer until it reaches 300-310°F. Then, quickly pour onto parchment paper and let it cool completely until hard. Once cooled and broken into shards, the amber color and somewhat irregular shapes can resemble Han Solo frozen in carbonite. (C’mon, work with us here. Use your imagination.) Perfect for little fingers still learning how to hold a lightsaber properly.

WOOKIE COOKIES

Remember when Luke was miffed because he was delayed from going into Tosche Station to pick up some power converters? (Don’t you just hate it when that happens?) Well, really he was just trying to sneak away from Uncle Owen to snarf down some Wookie Cookies. Slice local apples into wedges and spread a thin layer of peanut butter onto each to create a “furry” texture. Press a couple of raisins or mini chocolate chips onto the peanut butter for eyes and badabing, Wookie Cookies! Perfect for your nerdy friend’s annual May The Fourth Be With You Chewbacca Impersonation Contest, Lightsaber Choreography Demonstration, and General Merriment Jamboree.

YODA’S DAGOBAH DIP

Yoda meme

You knew we wouldn’t leave out everyone’s favorite oddly adorable and vertically challenged Jedi instructor. Blend fresh spinach with cream cheese, sour cream, garlic powder, onion powder, and a squeeze of lemon juice until smooth and vibrant green. Serve with pita chips. Not only is it delicious, but much like Yoda’s swampy home planet of Dagobah it looks, yes.
